Introduction:

Thermodynamics is the branch of Physics that deals with heat and temperature, and their relation to energy, work, radiation and properties of matter. The behavior of these quantities is governed by the four laws of thermodynamics which convey a quantitative description using measurable macroscopic physical quantities, but may be explained in terms of microscopic constituents by statistical mechanics. Thermodynamics applies to wide variety of topics in science and engineering, especially physical chemistry, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering, but also in field as complex as meteorology.

Chapter Analysis:

With 21 question in the past 11 years, this chapter happens to be a medium-weighted one. This chapter has not evaded the hands of the paper setters from 2013, with a total of 16 questions being asked between 2014-2019. This chapter falls in the category of medium-weighted chapter and hence, we should expect atleast 2-3 question from this chapter going by the general tred.
The below given graph will illustrate the above-mentioned analysis:

Year 2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009
Questions 2 3 2 3 2 2 2 0 2 1 2

The important topics to be covered from this chapter are:
• Thermal Equilibrium and Definition of Temperature
• Heat, Work and Internal Energy
• First Law of Thermodynamics
• Isothermal and Adiabatic Processes
• Second Law of Thermodynamics
• Reversible and Irreversible Processes
• Heat Engine and Refrigerator
• Laws of Thermodynamics

Tips and Tricks:

1. NCERT must be read properly for this chapter as it covers most of the topics briefly. Here is the link to the NCERT PDF version of the chapter:
2. Practice a large number of questions from this topic and leave no stones unturned to make this chapter one of your strengths.
3. Online video lectures might help the student in having a clearer understanding of the topic.

Q. Can we skip Hydrocarbons in NEET preparation?

This chapter falls in the category of medium-weighted chapter and hence, we should expect atleast 2-3 question from this chapter going by the general tred.

Q. What does Thermodynamics teach?

The behavior of these quantities is governed by the four laws of thermodynamics which convey a quantitative description using measurable macroscopic physical quantities
